Wilczek’s book is a mix of physics and philosophy he draws from his study of physics。 It starts out as if it is for the general reader, but parts of the presentation assume the reader is already familiar with physics terms and concepts。 There is no math, but I would have been lost at times without prior knowledge of the subjects。 It is a unique presentation organizing selected topics around basic ideas he dubs the ten fundamentals。 Looking at things from a different point of view is a theme of t Wilczek’s book is a mix of physics and philosophy he draws from his study of physics。 It starts out as if it is for the general reader, but parts of the presentation assume the reader is already familiar with physics terms and concepts。 There is no math, but I would have been lost at times without prior knowledge of the subjects。 It is a unique presentation organizing selected topics around basic ideas he dubs the ten fundamentals。 Looking at things from a different point of view is a theme of the book。 And it did help me see some issues in a new light。 So, although there is little new factually from what is in many other popular physics books, his approach had merit for me and I suspect for others who enjoy this genre。The sections on space, time and astrophysics are the most accessible, not that general relativity doesn’t present challenges。 It’s the quick takes on particle physics and quantum mechanics that are the most demanding。 But if you are interested in the quantum properties of elementary particles, which particles have 0, ½ or 1 spin, the relationship between quarks and gluons, QED, QCD, field theory and wave functions then you are in the right place。 Wilzcek’s explanations are brief and are used as taking off points for philosophical discussions。 He also describes some unusual particles。 He covers gravitons, since he treats spacetime as a type of “material。” He is a proponent of axions, a particle he named after a laundry detergent。 He believes axions could account for dark matter。 Most interesting to me were anyons, quasiparticles that have a memory and may be useful in quantum computing。 Quasiparticles are derived from standard particles but are embedded in materials where they take on different properties。 Then there are photons that take on mass when they enter a superconductor。 Wilczek notes the very presence of a photon with mass denotes a superconductor。 The philosophical parts have their moments but his attempts to build broader themes from the physics didn’t really catch on with me。 Let’s take complementarity, Bohr’s explanation for why momentum and position can’t be determined at the same time in quantum mechanics。 Wilczek describes this in terms of physics then philosophizes it into a general proposition about people trying to hold and act on contradictory beliefs at the same time。 He carries this further and further at one point stating, “The complementarity between humility and self-respect is, I believe, the central message of our fundamentals。” I felt this was stretching the idea too far, but I loved Wilczek's Einstein quote。 A human being is part of a whole, called by us the ‘Universe’ —a part limited in time and space。 He experiences himself, his thoughts, and feelings, as something separated from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness。 This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us。 Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty。 。。。more

A beautiful book that one hand achieves it's stated goal on the other hand it lefts something to be desired。As the stated goal - keys to reality and physical science for everyday people (ok he mentions lawyers engineers etc - you need to be perceptive but not proficient in mathematics or physics) it hits bulls eye。As an engineer it gave me a good understanding about the nature of the scientific progress the tools for making observations checking theories with experimental data, on a scale which A beautiful book that one hand achieves it's stated goal on the other hand it lefts something to be desired。As the stated goal - keys to reality and physical science for everyday people (ok he mentions lawyers engineers etc - you need to be perceptive but not proficient in mathematics or physics) it hits bulls eye。As an engineer it gave me a good understanding about the nature of the scientific progress the tools for making observations checking theories with experimental data, on a scale which I admit I lacked。 It will help anyone。 A property of the book is that it is extremely grounded - you get to understand uncertainty etc etc not in the philosophical level which might not even apply - but on a physics level。 However, this grounded approach makes the book seem a little thin on the epistemological/philosophical realm。 Many challenges arise there - but they are not really explored or mentioned。 Also the biological realm is treated a little bit in a high level for my taste - the author seems to firmly believe that intelligence and Hard AI will be achieved with more and faster silicon - something it is not proven or entirely possible even according to a good number of leading scientists。 The view is reasonable but in the book it seems hasty and - allow me to say with much salt on that - naive。 Lastly the closing remark that "no modification of relativity and gravity is needed' is not according to my taste: a whole range of alternatives to standard cosmological model exist - like MOND, RMOND, etc。 While less probable they are still possible - with some (non-decisively) experimental data backing 。 Given that preference of one over the other is an epistimological issue really - I would appreciate the author to had given some additional insights why the one over the other is prefered and making some more concrete discussion。 So in conclusion a hugely useful book - for an introduction to the matters discussed。 。。。more

I found this book a little hard to get through。 I love the philosophy and magic and wonder (such as they are) that underlie quantum mechanics。 I love it told through story and examples -- this book was a bit dense, even though I have a fair grounding (as a lay person) in the subject。 I loved the final chapter though, and also the afterword。 Those two hit the tone I loved in books of this nature。

In this book, Nobel Prize winner Frank Wilczek explains what he considers ten fundamental facts about or features of the physical world, each in its own chapter。 I'm quite familiar with the first few fundamentals, but as the book progressed, I learned about a few topics that I'd never heard of, including axions, a new, still-hyp I studied physics in university in the 1980s。 I read books like Fundamentals every so often to find out what's new in the field without having to remember all that math! In this book, Nobel Prize winner Frank Wilczek explains what he considers ten fundamental facts about or features of the physical world, each in its own chapter。 I'm quite familiar with the first few fundamentals, but as the book progressed, I learned about a few topics that I'd never heard of, including axions, a new, still-hypothetical elementary particle。The first five fundamentals are space, time, fields, laws of nature, and "dynamic complexity" ("complex material patterns that change in time")。 The next two are the Big Bang and the emergence of a complex universe from simple beginnings (although Wilczek doesn't call it this, it reads to me as chaos theory)。 Fundamental 8 is that reality is not how it appears to us in everyday life。 Modern physics predicts certain particles (such as the Higgs particle) and fields (such as gravitational waves), and we just now are becoming able to conduct experiments to verify those predictions。The next fundamental fact is that we don't understand everything yet。 Our models have been remarkably good so far, but there are still unanswered questions, such as what caused the Big Bang。 Some of the most recent theories to deal with these questions involve dark matter and dark energy。 Here, Wilczek begins to shine, from my perspective。 He provides one of the clearer explanations I've read for these theoretical phenomena, why we think they exist, and how we might confirm that existence。 Wilczek's final fundamental is complementarity, the idea that there are different yet equally valid ways of modelling reality, and each way has useful applications。Wilczek acknowledges that these fundamental ideas are hard to grasp and counter to our intuition, yet they have led to many of the technologies that support and enhance our modern world。 These ideas also show us, if we are willing to look, that we humans are integral parts of the universe, made of the same stuff and obeying the same laws as all the other objects we encounter。 To understand that "stuff" is to understand ourselves。Wilczek's writing is good, but it can be dry at times, particularly in the early chapters, which may be overly familiar to readers who are comfortable with physics。 His overall style is less readable than, say, Sagan or Hawking, who are my benchmarks for this sort of book。 There is interesting material throughout, but I found it much more interesting in the last few chapters, as Wilczek entered territory I had not visited before。 。。。more

[Imported automatically from my blog。 Some formatting there may not have translated here。] Another book about physics for the layperson。 It's not bad。 The author, Frank Wilczek, is a Nobel Prize winner in physics, so I'm relatively sure his explication of science here is solid。 His mission here is broad, and somewhat daunting: an overview of the "fundamental lessons we can learn from the study of the physical world。" So in a relatively short book, it's a whirlwind tour of cosmology, particle ph [Imported automatically from my blog。 Some formatting there may not have translated here。] Another book about physics for the layperson。 It's not bad。 The author, Frank Wilczek, is a Nobel Prize winner in physics, so I'm relatively sure his explication of science here is solid。 His mission here is broad, and somewhat daunting: an overview of the "fundamental lessons we can learn from the study of the physical world。" So in a relatively short book, it's a whirlwind tour of cosmology, particle physics, relativity, etc。 Books like this (I've noticed) tend to shy away from math。 It's apparently an ironclad law in the publishing world that each equation in a book decreases the readership by some non-trivial amount。 Also, no graphs。 (Well, there's one here on page 3: World GDP per capita, from 1500-2000。) And no diagrams, just a few basic tables。 Instead, there's a lot (a lot) of what I call "poetic language"。 (In fact, there's an actual poem in the book's dedication, to his wife Betsy。) Sometimes this can be beautifully illuminating。 Example from page 106: "Atoms sing songs that bare their souls, in light。" Which is a neat way of expressing the more pedestrian fact that electrons jumping between energy levels in an atom emit photons of characteristic energy revealing the atom's structural nature。 Wilczek does as good a job as I've seen trying to explain particle/field duality。 E。g。, how sometimes it makes sense to think of light as a wiggling electomagnetic field, as described by Maxwell's equations。 But other times it makes sense to think of light as quantized particles (again, photons), little shiny balls moving fast on their geodesics。 Both views are true, but it's very difficult to hold both in your head simultaneously。 。。。more

I’ve read several books about particle physics, relativity, quantum mechanics, cosmology, etc。, all intended for laypeople of course, and I have fully understood none of them。 In fact, all of them have huge sections that leave me befuddled。 But actually, this book had a much better ratio than most, I probably sort of felt like I “got” three-quarters of it。 Maybe Wilczek has better explanations? Maybe he just skips over the hardest parts? Whatever it is, if you like this kind of stuff but would l I’ve read several books about particle physics, relativity, quantum mechanics, cosmology, etc。, all intended for laypeople of course, and I have fully understood none of them。 In fact, all of them have huge sections that leave me befuddled。 But actually, this book had a much better ratio than most, I probably sort of felt like I “got” three-quarters of it。 Maybe Wilczek has better explanations?
